REMOTE SQUAD x Cristine Balarine

Above the Island. Into the Canvas.
High above Lipari, artist Cristine Balarine brought her brushes and canvases to the rooftop of Villa Pianoconte—creating live against the cinematic backdrop of the Aeolian horizon. Cristine Balarine holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from The Bartlett (University College London) and formal training in Florentine Renaissance art history. Now living and creating in the Aeolian Islands, her work blends Indigenous, African, and European traditions with structural spatial awareness.

The Artist

Her paintings have been exhibited at Sotheby’s London (2024), featured in the London and Florence Biennials, and awarded First Prize at ArtBAM Munich.

Taped directly to the warm stone rooftop 300 meters above sea level, each canvas was created in the open air. There were no studio walls — only the shifting Mediterranean sun, sea mist, and volcanic breezes.

Grounded in her architectural training at The Bartlett (UCL) and deep Aeolian roots, Cristine lets the island’s topography and raw elements dictate the rhythm of every brushstroke. The collaboration moves from the open rooftop into the living spaces of Villa Pianoconte. The original canvases now hang throughout our work suites, private rooms, and lounge areas — creating a living, tactile gallery that guests and teams live and work alongside every day.
